Pachystachys lutea, also known as Shrimp Plant due to it’s blooms having a vague resemblance to shrimp, is a fast growing sub-tropical plant. It produces white flowers from upright, golden-yellow bracts. Shrimp Plant is versatile and can be grown indoors as a house plant or used outdoors as an annual in containers and flower beds.

When grown indoors Pachystachys can grow to 1-2 feet so pruning is needed to keep it in check. You can use Shrimp Plant as a landscape annual where it can grow up to 4 feet tall and spread 2-3 feet in warm deep south climates.

Shrimp Plant blooms from spring to fall. Blooms can reach 5 inches long. The foliage is dark green with long, oval shaped leaves. It’s unique bloom and semi-evergreen foliage add a tropical look in patio containers and landscapes. Deadheading blooms and pinching growth tips will promote bushiness and more blooms.

Plant Pachystachys Shrimp Plant in part sun to sun 1-3 feet apart. Avoid afternoon sun in the South. Plants will grow to an average of 2-3 feet tall and wide depending on the climate. The soil needs to be evenly moist and well-drained. Being a sub-tropical plant, it need warm weather to grow well.

Pachystachys also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Shrimp Plant is also known as Golden Candles Plant and Lollipop Plant.
