Harlequin Blue Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower) has lavender-blue flowers that resemble a pincushion. The foliage is grayish-green with a ferny appearance that forms a low mound. Wiry stems shoot up from the mound to support the flowers which are twice the size of Butterfly Blue Scabiosa. Enjoy these large blooms from early summer to fall.
Harlequin Blue Scabiosa will add a delicate texture to your landscape or container. Butterflies and bees are attracted the pincushion flowers but deer tend to stay away. To promote more blooms, cut the faded flowers off. Cut back in late fall to promote healthy plants in the spring. Scabiosa prefers average to dry soil conditions but they do not like wet feet. Once they are established they are drought tolerant.
