Magilla Perilla

*We no longer grow this item, but feel free to peruse the information.

Magilla Purple Perilla is a striking plant that features showy coleus-like foliage, but is extremely heat and cold tolerant. The leaves are deep purple with a stripe of pink down the center.  They may look a lot like coleus, but Perilla has sturdier more woody stems.  Like coleus, this plant will produce small flower spikes that should be pinched off.  It is a wonderful addition to large mixed containers or for adding contrast to landscape beds.  Though Perilla  can be grown in sun or part shade, it puts on the best show in full sun.  Make sure you have a large spot to plant this guy in.  It will get tall and spread out almost as wide.  If planted in a container, make it a fairly large one.  You almost can’t go wrong with this plant and it’s versatility.

In February, 2011, Better Homes and Gardens named Perilla as a Top Shade Loving Annual.
